Senior Cemetery Caretaker State Role Title: Trades Technician IV Hiring Range: Up to $55K Pay Band: 4 Agency: Dept of Veterans Services Location: Suffolk Cemetery Agency Website: Recruitment Type: Agency Employee Only - A Responsibilities Serve Virginia’s veterans and their families by ensuring they receive benefits, support, quality care, and recognition. Maintain cemetery grounds and prepare graves, including gravesite assignment, verification, and excavation. Oversee burial functions (maps, interments, entombments, inurnments, disinterments). Perform lawn sodding, seeding, fertilizing, and irrigation system troubleshooting. Inspect, verify, and set memorial monuments and temporary markers. Operate manual and mechanical earth‑moving and lawn care equipment. Cleanup cemetery operations. Lead and oversee work of Cemetery Caretakers, ensuring day‑to‑day assignments per NCA standards. Supervise staff during absence of Grounds Manager. Perform additional duties as assigned by Grounds Manager, Superintendent, or Director. Qualifications Knowledge of cemetery maintenance, operations, grounds maintenance, irrigation system maintenance and repair. Building trade skills, section mapping, gravesite pinning/numbering, gravesite verification. General maintenance skills: landscaping, mowing, planting, weeding, irrigation, fertilization, sprinkler systems, pest/weed control. Maintenance and repair of cemetery tools and equipment. Ability to operate equipment such as excavator, loader, backhoe, soil compactor, spray rig, lowering devices. Ability to oversee operations and lead staff. Ability to lift/maneuver a 220‑pound grave marker with help of one additional person. Familiarity with OSHA safety measures, health codes, regulations, building safety. Communicate clearly and provide clear instructions to staff. Additional Considerations Demonstrates thoroughness in problem resolution, community engagement, courteous service.
