Description:

Maintain accession records necessary to confirm specimen/result identity; assists pathologists and residents in processing, dissection and description of gross anatomic findings or submitted specimens in accordance with established procedures.

Performs computer data entry and verification procedures; reports to Supervisor and performs duties as assigned.


Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Pathology Assistant to support pathologists in examining and processing biological specimens. The Pathology Assistant will be responsible for gross examination, dissection, and documentation of surgical and autopsy specimens, ensuring accuracy and compliance with laboratory protocols.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Specimen Handling & Processing:
    • Perform gross examination and dissection of surgical specimens under the supervision of a pathologist.
    • Prepare tissue samples for microscopic examination, ensuring proper fixation and sectioning.
    • Assist in the preparation of frozen sections for intraoperative diagnosis.
  • Autopsy Assistance:
    • Assist in forensic and hospital autopsies, including evisceration and tissue sampling.
    • Collect and document medical evidence while maintaining chain-of-custody procedures.
  • Documentation & Reporting:
    • Accurately describe gross specimens, including size, shape, and pathology findings.
    • Maintain detailed records and reports in compliance with regulatory and laboratory standards.
  • Quality Assurance & Compliance:
    • Ensure adherence to laboratory safety protocols, infection control, and biohazard disposal.
    • Follow CAP (College of American Pathologists) and CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) guidelines.
  • Collaboration & Communication:
    • Work closely with pathologists, laboratory personnel, and medical staff.
    • Train and supervise laboratory technologists and students as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Education & Certification:
    • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Pathology, Biology, or a related field.
    • Completion of a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists' Assistant program (preferred).
    • ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) certification as a Pathologists' Assistant (PA) (preferred or required depending on employer).
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 1-2 years of experience in a pathology or laboratory setting (preferred).
  • Skills & Competencies:
    • Strong knowledge of human anatomy, histology, and medical terminology.
    • Attention to detail and ability to work efficiently under time constraints.
    • Proficiency in laboratory information systems (LIS) and medical documentation software.
