**Short Description**

The Histotechnician performs duties in the histology laboratory according to
accepted practices; prepares tissue specimens for routine and special
processing; selects correct protocol based on physician orders.

Prepares thin slices of human tissue on slides for analysis by examining,
fixing, and processing the tissue for proper sample preservation; surrounding
the tissue with paraffin wax in a process called embedding; cutting a tissue
sample with a microtome or cryostat; mounting the tissue sample on a slide;
staining or dying the sample to emphasize abnormalities.

Preparesorganizes slides for pathologist’s review. Handles requests for
additional slidesstains submitted by the pathologists.

Assists the manager with inventory tracking. May file slides and blocks or
retrieve same as needed.

**MOHS** laboratory: Performs frozen section processing for Mohs micrographic
surgery - cuts tissue in ultra-thin sections modifying technique based on
tissue type.

Trains andor supervises students as well as new & existing employees.
Properly documents training. Develops and performs employee competency
assessments.

Demonstrates excellent customer service skills; effectively communicates with
personnel within the laboratory and throughout health system as appropriate;
handles inquiries expeditiously.

Maintains knowledge of and follows all hospital policies and procedures as
well as laboratory general and department specific policies and procedures.

**Experience Required**

2 years experience preferred

**Education Requirements**

High School Diploma

Associate degree Preferred

Completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnology programmed preferred.
