An oral surgical assistant primarily supports an oral surgeon during surgical procedures by preparing patients and the operating room, sterilizing instruments, assisting with suctioning and instrument exchange during surgery, monitoring vital signs, providing post-operative instructions to patients, and maintaining a sterile environment, all while following strict infection control protocols. 

Key responsibilities of an oral surgical assistant: 

• Patient preparation:
• Greeting patients, reviewing medical history, taking vital signs, explaining procedures and post-operative care instructions. 
• Surgical setup:
• Preparing the operating room by laying out sterile instruments, ensuring proper lighting and suction equipment is ready. 
• Instrument handling:
• Passing instruments to the surgeon, maintaining a sterile field, and managing suction during surgery. 
• Patient monitoring:
• Monitoring vital signs like blood pressure, pulse, and respiration throughout the procedure. 
• Post-operative care:
• Providing post-operative instructions to patients, including pain management and dietary guidelines. 
• Sterilization and cleaning:
• Properly cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing all surgical instruments and equipment. 
• Radiography:
• Taking and developing dental X-rays as needed. 
• Charting and documentation:
• Recording details of the surgical procedure, including medications administered and any complications. 

Required skills and qualifications: 

• Dental assisting certification: Completion of an accredited dental assisting program and current certification. 
• Advanced training in oral surgery assisting: Specific training in oral surgery procedures, including anesthesia monitoring and advanced infection control practices. 
• Strong technical skills: Ability to handle surgical instruments with precision and dexterity. 
• Excellent communication skills: Clearly explaining procedures to patients and addressing their concerns. 
• Attention to detail: Maintaining a sterile environment and accurately documenting procedures. 
• Ability to work under pressure: Remaining calm and focused during surgical procedures.
