Overview

Climate Imperative Foundation (CI) seeks a skilled, creative and innovative climate change professional to serve as its Initiative Director, U.S. Electricity, to develop grantmaking strategies and portfolios that advance decarbonizing the electricity sector in the United States. This role will work with Climate Imperatives leadership team to align the strategy with the organizations values and theory of change. The individual will also work with a diverse group of partners, from grassroots advocates to high-level policymakers and aligned philanthropies, to develop and drive coordinated approaches to decarbonize the U.S. Electricity sector.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy

  • Identify the near-term opportunities to support policymakers and advocates in key geographies to accelerate a clean energy transition
  • Ensure the policies we are promoting and winning are equitable so that all community members are able to afford and enjoy the benefits of this transition
  • From a national vantage point, see opportunities to knit city, state, and regional efforts into a cohesive strategy, amplifying and replicating wins in other jurisdictions
  • Design and evolve CI initiative strategy in response to changing campaign landscape, and present strategy updates to CI leadership and board
  • Develop a deep understanding of the decision-making venues, including the social, economic, institutional, and other forces that could drive or inhibit electric decarbonization

Campaign Coordination & Coalition-Building

  • In collaboration with aligned partners, determine how to rapidly accelerate the clean energy transition nationwide and build consensus around the need to phase out coal and gas, including by intensifying existing efforts
  • Ensure that justice, equity, and affordability are central to the design, implementation, and impact of the initiative
  • Build a concise and metric-driven campaign strategy to win, in consultation with partners
  • Ensure we and our partners have a clear understanding of how to win in each decision-making venue

Grantmaking & Convening

  • Identify the grantee partners who can execute the initiative strategy and develop a portfolio of grants so they can lead this initiative to success
  • Regularly convene grantee and funding partners to ensure strong coordination, track progress, repair problems, expand, contract or phase down elements of the initiative, as necessary
  • Report, without bias, on progress and stalls to the Board of Directors
  • Serve as a thought leader to the broader philanthropic and NGO community on strategy and grantmaking
  • Lead on the grantee relationship through regular check-ins
  • Serve as a sounding board and resource for other Climate Imperative staff

Experience

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in a climate, energy, and/or policy focused role
  • Knowledge of or experience in grantmaking
  • Strong experience in the U.S. electricity sector
  • Ability to advance relevant policy through first-hand experience in government, nonprofits, and/or philanthropy
  • Familiarity with the climate and clean energy field landscape, as well as advocacy strategies, tactics, and key leverage points to advance policy
  • Ability to develop strategies and prioritize resources to maximize impact
  • Strong research, analysis, and synthesis skillset
  • Ability to prioritize and be flexible in a fast-paced, constantly evolving, and collaborative environment
  • Effective and flexible interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills
  • Detail-orientation with strong organizational and project management skills
  • Ability and willingness to travel (up to 15%)
  • Deep interest, passion, and commitment to reducing climate change

Salary

We provide a salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The target national salary range is $195,000 to $205,000 with adjustments made for people in higher-expense markets, i.e. the San Francisco Bay Area and Washington, D.C. Currently, all staff local to the San Francisco and DC offices go into the office one to three days a week. Equity is incredibly important to the organization, and a pay audit for equity is completed annually.

This role is done primarily in an office environment.
