POSITION SUMMARY:

The Recovery Coach, under the direction of the Behavioral Health Manager, works with and supports individuals immersed in addictions and provides coaching to people in recovery from the abuse of alcohol and drugs, gambling, eating disorders or other addictive behaviors. Recovery Coaches meet regularly and are on-call 24/7 with clients to aid in their recovery from addictions. The focus of the Recovery Coach is to assist clients residing in Sault Tribe’s opioid recovery residences to offer and sustain a supportive and sober living environment. Recovery Coaches are NOT professional counselors. Recovery coaches are expected to speak from their strength, experience and hope.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Understanding the language of active recovery
  • Share personal story with families/individuals
  • Complete initial interview to understand “how the resident got sober and how he/she plans to sustain active recovery”
  • Inspire confidence in the individual’s ability to change and follow their plan to sustain recovery
  • Help to find resources to solve immediate problems
  • Help family to learn about the experience their loved one is going through on their recovery journey
  • Help the individual to create a network of support (family members, elders, therapists, social worker, physician, friends, etc.)
  • Provider referrals to appropriate resources and education at various stages of recovery
  • Assist individuals with acquiring appropriate documents such as driver’s license, food stamps, etc.
  • Identify sobriety based social activities in the community
  • Encourage individuals to participate in traditional medicine and other culturally appropriate recovery activities
  • Participate in community activities to develop sober activities and awareness of importance of recovery
  • Provide transportation of clients to local service providers.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Provide regular feedback to Clinical Social worker and case managers
  • All other job-related duties as assigned.

CONTACTS:

Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, executives, customers, outside vendors/service providers, Federal, State and Tribal agency representatives, hospital and medical field personnel and insurance agencies.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Position primarily sedentary sitting/lifting of maximum of 10 pounds. Physical factors include constant use of near/midrange/far vision, depth perception, color/field of vision, typing; frequent sitting, use of hearing; occasional standing, walking, carrying/lifting, pushing/pulling, stooping, kneeling reaching, use of smell, and bending. Working conditions are typical medical office environment. Potential hazards include constant infectious exposure, patient contact, computer use and occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, chemicals, needles/syringes and equipment use.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.

Experience: Two years of recovery from lived-experience in substance use required. Minimum of 200 hours of direct practice (volunteer or paid) in a peer recovery support environment.

Certification/License: Michigan Peer Recovery Coach Certificate Required within 6 months of employment, or Certification from a National Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist. This certificate must be maintained. Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver’s license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of HIPAA and Privacy Act required. Must have working knowledge and be able to use word processing and spreadsheet and data base software. Must have working knowledge and be able to use office machines, such as calculator, copier, fax, printer and computer. Must have critical thinking skills. Reading and writing skills required. Must be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. Must have organizational skills and be able to plan, prioritize and manage work load to meet goals in a timely manner. Must maintain confidentiality. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and the general public. Must have the ability to respond to difficult and stressful situations in an efficient, effective and positive manner. Native American preferred.
