Under the supervision of the General Counsel, the Chief AIG – Legal Counsel oversees and guides OIG’s Assistant Inspector Generals, providing legal counsel on investigations, audits, and reviews. This management position involves handling complex investigations and ensuring legal compliance.

DUTIES:

  1. Prepare and review legal memoranda, reports, advisories, and notifications related to investigations and recommendations, ensuring timely and compliant work products.
  2. Collaborate with the General Counsel to set strategies, policies, and procedures for the legal section.
  3. Conduct performance evaluations of subordinate staff.
  4. Monitor and report on the legal docket and activities of Assistant Inspectors General.
  5. Provide legal advice and support for investigations, audits, and reviews across the office.
  6. Perform legal research on relevant laws, regulations, and policies.
  7. Coordinate with the City’s Law Department for legal proceedings and provide legal guidance to OIG personnel.
  8. Work with outside law enforcement and prosecution entities as needed.
  9. Interview witnesses and subjects of investigations.
  10. Conduct staff training on legal practices.
  11. Offer legal and strategic counsel to field personnel.
  12. Perform additional duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school, admission to the Illinois Bar or a reciprocal state, with at least five years of legal experience or equivalent.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in internal investigations, criminal law, or labor/employment law.
  • Experience supervising attorneys.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Interpersonal, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

SALARY: Range: $118,128 – $166,944 annually, starting at $118,128.

TRAVEL & SCHEDULE: No travel outside Chicago required. Standard hours 9:00am – 5:00pm, with flexibility.

RESIDENCY: Must reside in Chicago; proof required at start.
