Description of the Department or Unit The mission of the Dr. Wiley F. Smith Department of Psychology is to engage in teaching, scholarship, and service in order to promote and advance understanding of the science of psychology, its application, and its utility to our students, fellow scholars, the University, and the public.
The department has 38 full-time faculty members (34 tenure-track) and master's programs in Psychological Science, Industrial-Organizational and Human Resource Management, and School Psychology, as well as a newly launched Doctor of Psychology Program in Clinical Psychology (established Fall 2019). There are approximately 1400 undergraduate psychology majors and 80 full-time graduate students. The new hire will be affiliated with the Psychological Science MA program, which includes 14 tenure-track faculty members. The program aims to prepare graduate students for doctoral programs or to directly enter the workforce.
We anticipate that the successful candidate will have the use of lab space within the College of Arts and Sciences Animal Resource Facility (ARF). The suite consists of a central room surrounded by four observation/work rooms. Each of these rooms has ports for cable access, and two of the rooms have observation windows. Two rooms have a set of 8 MED Associates Modular Test Chambers (16 total, each chamber is in an enclosure, details available on request). Lighting is controlled independently in each of the five rooms. All drawer, cabinet, and shelf space is in the central room.
In addition to colony rooms with one specifically adjacent to the Psychology Lab suite, the ARF provides shared spaces for research use such as a morgue with a fume hood. There are pre-op with an autoclave and surgery facilities. The surgery space allows for rodent surgery. Additionally, the ARF houses a variety of species and provides some additional research space.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities The successful candidate will teach 3 courses per semester to students of a variety of backgrounds. Undergraduate courses will likely include biological psychology and other topics in the candidate's area of research.
Graduate courses will likely include Biological Bases of Behavior. There are expectations of this role to establish a program of empirical inquiry to include peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and external grant applications. This role will also be expected to involve undergraduate and graduate students in their research programs.

Suggested Salary Range Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
ABD Consideration: ABD with reduction in rank and salary (see desc. below)
ABD Description ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.
No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
