Assistant Police Chief Job Posting
Starting Salary: $81,742.76 per year
The City of Carthage is seeking a highly qualified and experienced law enforcement professional to serve as Assistant Police Chief. This leadership role is critical to the effective operation of our Police Department and offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on public safety and community engagement.
Position Overview
The Assistant Police Chief assumes the authority and responsibilities of the Chief of Police in their absence and manages departmental operations under the Chief’s direction. This position oversees personnel, budgeting, compliance reporting, and day-to-day operations across multiple divisions, ensuring the highest standards of law enforcement service.
Key Responsibilities
· Supervise personnel in Patrol, Support, Clerical, Taxi, and School Crossing Guard divisions.
· Oversee daily operations, including staffing, budgeting, and policy implementation.
· Assist with hiring and promotional processes.
· Prepare and submit required reports (e.g., Racial Profiling to Attorney General; Drug & Alcohol to DOT).
· Approve departmental purchasing requisitions.
· Maintain personnel records, including POST continuing education hours.
· Issue directives as needed and carry out duties aligned with departmental goals.
Qualifications
· Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of broad law enforcement experience, including at least three (3) years in an administrative or supervisory command position (preferred).
· Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
· Certification: Missouri POST certification is required.
· Knowledge & Skills: Comprehensive understanding of municipal law enforcement operations; strong leadership, management, and budgeting skills; ability to interpret and apply Federal, State, and local laws; excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
· Licenses: Valid Missouri driver’s license and ability to maintain required certifications.
· Background Check: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation.
Physical & Schedule Requirements
Ability to walk, stand, stoop, and occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.
Standard schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with additional hours as needed for meetings and events.
